British had the world strongest navy in the world at the time. The British blockade the american fleet to prevented supplies and reinforcements from reaching the continental army.

In the early years of the war the Americans won some battles in the south . They defeated the loyalist at moores creek and saved Charles town SC from the british . Great Brittan understood that it would be hard to regain control of the colony . The british changed their plan they planed to hit hard in the south they also used their sea power.
Henry Clinton sent 3,500 troops to savannaha GA . Clinton planed to attack Charles town SC . Charles town surrendered . This was the worst defeat for the Americans . A parliament member stated " we look on America as our feet".
AFRICAN AMERICANS......
As the need for grew for more soliders some defied the law and let African Americans to join the war effort. Rhode island had a regiment of African American soliders . Some were runaways others earned their freedom . Most fought and belelived the same values as the partriots . Estmates show 5,000 African American soliders joined the patriots in the war. By the end of the war all the states except South Carloina enlisted African Americans to fight.
Guervilla Warfare.......
The patriots were suprising them with attacks.The british were not getting alot of help from thier loyalist.A successful leader was francis marion,or pertated the swamp of eastern south carolina.

Spain was giving americans lots of money, supplys, and trade routes. January 1777 spain had a new governer bernardo de galvez. He loaned thousands of dollars to america. He also opened the port of new orleans for the patriots and, enabled them to ship supplies down the mississippi river. He gave them free trade on the part of the colonist. He also shipped tons of food and supply down the mississippi river.

Cornwallis marched to VA in April and raided the state and almost catching govner Thomas Jefferson . Washington sent Lafayette and general Anthony Wayne to fight Cornwallis of the coast of VA

At kings mountain more than 1,000 loyalists and one officer were guarding. patriot sharp shooters forced the british to retreat. The patriots wanted the war to end cause all thier farms and homes have been destroyed.
